Hyde Park - The Royal Parks

Hyde Park is one of London's eight Royal Parks. It is located in the west of the city and was originally part of the extensive deer hunting grounds of the Bishop of Winchester. In 1637, Charles I ordered a large garden to be created on the site, which was completed in 1640. The park became a public garden in 1727 and was renamed Hyde Park after Prince Henry Augustus, Duke of Cumberland and Strathearn. During World War II, Hyde Park was used as a military barracks and training ground.

Today, it remains one of London's most popular tourist destinations, with over three million visitors each year. The largest part of Hyde Park is its wetland area, which contains several large ponds and streams as well as several gardens including the Serpentine lake and Waterlily Garden.

The park also contains a children's playground, sports facilities including a cricket ground and tennis courts, and historic attractions including Buckingham Palace and St Paul's Cathedral.
